Flour tortillas

This flour tortilla recipe is similar to the popular corn tortilla, but made with wheat flour. It is part of the typical gastronomy of Mexico and is used to make burritos and fajitas and to accompany other dishes such as the Cochinita pebble.

  • Ingredients for making tortilla flour: ° 1 cup hot water
    ° 4 1/4 cup wheat flour
    ° Pinch of salt
    ° 1 teaspoon baking powder
    ° 150 grams of lard or margarine (185 ml)
  • How to make tortilla flour:

Making a tortilla from wheat flour is very simple. Mix the flour with a little salt and baking powder. If you sift it in advance, the mixture will be smoother. Then make a volcano with flour and leave a hole in the middle.

In the cavity of the volcano, add the butter and start mixing. While incorporating these ingredients, pour in the water little by little until it forms a paste of the Mexican tortilla of consistency to form a soft ball.

Tip: You can substitute lard and make a tortilla with butter or oil.

Leave ball rest for a some min also form little balls of size you want. These balls are called “testales” and you must roll them with a rolling pin until you make a sheet of the thickness you want. It is advisable to put it on a ground table.

Once you are done making the soft tortilla, take a wide frying pan or skillet, and heat it over a fire. You can drop a few drops of oil or lard to fry a wheat flour tortilla. When hot, cook the Mexican tortillas one by one on both sides.
